A Special Collection: My Father‘s Art（Peiguo Fang’s Light and Shadow Action Painting）


    
  The works presented here belong to my father. His artistic practice is grounded in the concept of Light and Shadow Action Painting, also referred to as Digital Expressionism, a framework jointly researched and developed by my father and me. While the conceptual and stylistic foundations of his practice were formed through our long-term shared research, the works themselves are independently realized through his own artistic practice.

   “Light and Shadow Action Painting,” also known as “Digital Expressionism,” is an artistic practice that explores chance and spontaneity through the abstract interplay of light and shadow. The method involves the artist working intuitively and unconsciously with a range of digital drawing and image-editing tools, allowing images to gradually emerge through continuous change and serendipity.

  In this process, chance is not controlled but activated. When a particular combination of chance-generated effects is judged to be the most expressive, the work is fixed at that moment, becoming a record of that particular moment of chance.

  This art form employs variable abstract color effects to evoke a fluid perceptual experience, in which qualities such as allure, atmosphere, and essence are continually transformed. It also reflects an understanding of contemporary life as a continuously unfolding and unpredictable process, shaped by uncertainty, latent possibilities, mistakes, and unnoticed tensions—an aspect that resonates in some ways with the Action Painting of Jackson Pollock. Through sustained creative practice, the work seeks to transform chance into form, while capturing and fixing chance itself.

    The first nineteen works presented here date approximately from 2012 to 2017 and were first independently published on Amazon in 2018. The works that follow these nineteen are also by my father, representing his subsequent artistic development and more recent practice. Together, these works trace the continuity and evolution of his independent artistic practice within the broader framework of Light and Shadow Action Painting / Digital Expressionism.

 Light and Shadow Action Painting 《Pregnant Woman》 was among 432 images selected as a winner from 6387 international entries for the American Illustration AI45 juried competition.


2026—— WINNER - Creative Quarterly #85,  Fine Art Category（USA）.
Light and Shadow Action Painting 《Digital Expressionism:Seated Woman》 was selected as a winner in the Professional Fine Art category of Creative Quarterly 85, an international juried competition that has promoted outstanding work in fine art, illustration, and other disciplines for more than 20 years.
